Threaded By Fate
SOFT DAWN
The light found her gently, like it knew her name.
A single beam slipped through the sun catcher hanging in the window, striking the glass just right so it burst into color. Red, ambers, soft greens — they shimmered across the room like tiny wandering spirits, drifting over the walls, the blankets, the curve of Lumi’s cheek. One bold shard of gold settled on her closed eyelids, warm enough to coax her from sleep.
She stirred, lashes fluttering, and the world came back to her in layers.
First, the smell — that unmistakable scent of clay. Cool, damp, mineral rich. It clung to the air the way earth does after rain, grounding and ancient. It wrapped around her like a familiar embrace, reminding her of everything she had touched, molded, breathed life into. Even half-asleep, she felt the quiet hum of possibility in it.
Then the light again, dancing across her vision as she blinked awake. The sun catcher swayed gently in the morning breeze, scattering new patterns across the ceiling. For a moment, it looked like the room itself was breathing color.
Lumi stretched slowly, letting the warmth of the sun seep into her bones. The day felt soft around the edges, as if it had been crafted just for her — a morning shaped by light, earth, and possibility.
She sat up, the clay-scented air wrapping around her like a familiar embrace. Something in her chest hummed, a quiet excitement she couldn’t name yet, but it pulsed with the same rhythm as the sunlight.
Today felt different. Soft around the edges. Expectant.
She stretched, letting the warmth seep into her bones, and whispered to herself, “Something’s shifting.”
BRAM
Lumi moved through her morning with a lightness she couldn’t explain. She showered, dressed, letting her wavy hair hang loosely complementing her bare shoulders, and dabbed a little clay dust from her fingers even though she hadn’t touched her wheel for months. The scent lingered anyway — part of her, like a second skin. Her cousins were picking her up for the amusement park. A rare day off. A chance to laugh, scream, be a kid again. As she waited, she checked her computer. Just to find out the internet is down.
A month of talking — late-night conversations, voice notes, shared stories — but no picture from him, selfie wasn’t his thing. He’d seen hers, albeit not her choice. He said he wanted to know her energy first, her voice, her mind. Something about that felt old-fashioned and strangely intimate. She wondered what he looked like. She wondered if she’d know him by just feelings alone.
Her cousins honked outside. Lumi grabbed her bag and headed out, sunlight catching in her hair as she closed the door behind her. With excitement and anxiousness will he recognize her changes and growth? Lumi had only begun to bloom within a year of the photo Bram had seen.
ALMOST
The park was alive — music, laughter, the metallic scent of rides heating in the sun, the sugary pull of funnel cakes drifting through the air. Lumi’s cousins dragged her from ride to ride, their excitement contagious. She laughed until her stomach hurt. She screamed on the roller coasters. She felt the sun on her skin and the wind in her hair and the clay-scented memory of home fading into the background. What she didn’t know — what she couldn’t know — was that Bram was there too.
Bram hadn’t planned on coming. His family decided to go at the last minute, and he went along, half-distracted, half-thinking about the girl he’d been talking to for a month. They were in town visiting his sister-in-law’s family. Wondering if she seen his message. The girl whose voice he knew better than some people he’d known for years. The girl whose picture he’d memorized without meaning to.
He wandered ahead of his family, letting them debate snacks and rides while he scanned the crowd with no real intention.
Then he stopped.
Something tugged at him — not a face, not a voice, but an aura. A warmth. A brightness. A girl standing with a group near the edge of a walkway, sunlight catching in her hair like it was made for her.
She was too far to see clearly, but something in him leaned toward her instinctively.
He didn’t know why.
He only knew he couldn’t look away.
Lumi’s group was arguing about which ride to go on next. She stood slightly apart, laughing at their indecision, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
Bram drifted closer.
Not enough to be noticed.
Just enough to study her silhouette, the way she moved, the way she held herself. Something about her felt familiar, like a memory he hadn’t lived yet.
He didn’t know it was her.
He only knew, he felt drawn — pulled by something he couldn’t name.
Her group finally chose a direction and began walking. Bram hesitated a moment before following at a distance, curiosity tugging him along.
He watched them for a few minutes, trying to place the feeling, trying to understand why this stranger’s presence felt like a chord being plucked inside him. Then the voices started to sound distant. His family was walking farther away. He exhaled, torn, and turned away. But the feeling lingered — warm, electric, impossible to ignore. Something about the moment feels too strange, too close.
Lumi laughed with her cousins, but a strange warmth lingered in her chest — like she’d brushed against something important without realizing it. Bram felt the same ache, the same tug, the same sense of almost. They walked in different directions, unaware of how close they had been. The thread between them had begun to tighten quietly, waiting for the right moment to pull.
THE QUIET PULL
The sun sank low, painting everything in warm gold and rose. Lights flicker on rides; food stands and string lights giving the park a dreamy glow. Lumi feels the shift immediately. A soft hum in her chest. The same sensation from the morning, but stronger. Her cousins are excited about fireworks; she feels something deeper. Body present but her heart and soul are searching.
Bram’s family decides to stay for fireworks, he tries to focus on them, but the girl from earlier keeps replaying in his mind. He keeps scanning the crowd without meaning to, like a lost child. He feels like he’s supposed to find something or someone tonight.
The park gets crowded as people gather for fireworks. Lumi and her cousins weave through the crowd looking for a spot.
Bram and his family move through the same area from another direction. They pass within ten feet of each other.
Lumi pauses, sensing something warm behind her.
Bram stops walking at the same moment, sensing something familiar. A wave of people moves between them blocking the view.
Her cousins ran ahead to claim a spot. Lumi lingers behind, feeling a flutter in her chest. She closes her eyes, breathing in the night air. She feels…recognized. Seen, but she doesn’t know by who. She opens her eyes and sees nothing unusual.
“I’ll meet you guys at the fireworks,” shouted Bram to his family. He follows the feeling again – stronger now, almost like a pull in his ribs. He walks through the crowd scanning faces, silhouettes and energy. He feels ridiculous, but he can’t stop.
Lumi steps into an open area lit by carnival lights. Bram turns a corner and sees her from behind, her hair glowing. He catches his breath and something inside him knows. He takes a step forward.
She turns slightly – enough for him to see her profile, but not enough to confirm. His eyes glued to her, but his brother grabbed him by the shoulder and broke his gaze. “What are you doing bro, this way.” When he looked up, she was gone.
The first firework explodes – bright, loud, shimmering. Liora watches the sky, but her mind is elsewhere.
Bram watches the crowd instead.
Both feel a strange warmth in their chest, like a spark.
Bodies untouched, eyes unseen but spiritually embraced.
Fireworks light up the sky in colors. For a split second, Lumi and Bram are illuminated at the same time facing opposite direction, only yards apart. Neither sees the other but both feel a sudden, inexplicable pull.
The fireworks end, the crowd disperses.
Lumi feels full and hollow at the same time, like she missed something important, something dear.
Bram feels the same, a strange ache in his chest.
They both head home with the same lingering feeling while they are surrounded by joy. “Something happened tonight. I just don’t know what.”
THREAD TIGHTENED
The next morning, sunlight spilled through Lumi’s sun catcher again, scattering colors across her room. Lumi wakes up with Bram in her mind first thing in the morning.
Bram felt bad thinking about why he was drawn to another girl when he was currently talking to Lumi. He wondered if Lumi showed up at the tournament or not, and if she did, was she looking for him?
They both had to go on with their day. Bram had to pack for their road trip back home. Lumi’s sister was dragging her to go grocery shopping with their family.
He wondered what Lumi was doing today knowing he’d leave her hometown to go back to his. So close, yet so far from her.
The road trip back home was an exhausting 5 hours. Bram got home, entered the door and shut it. The air was hot and muggy with a scent of something grilled.
“You’re home now, come eat. Where’s your brother and sister-in-law?” asked Bram’s mom.
“They just dropped me off because they’re in a hurry to go home.” Bram replied.
Bram’s dinner consists of his mom’s signature pepper dip with brown crisp broil pork, a side of boil plain veggies and fresh steamy rice. Oh, how he missed his mom’s cooking even though it’s only been 3 days. He down it so fast, gulp down a small cup of water and rushed straight to his room to turn on his computer. Even though he was devouring his delicious soul food Lumi was still stuck in his mind.
Lumi’s day was slow and tormenting. She didn’t want to go anywhere but stayed home to chat with Bram all day, but she had no choice. The sounds of her shoes shuffling and a loud bang to the door shutting. She sprinted to her computer desk and logged on.
“Hey just a heads up. We aren’t going to the tournament anymore. My sister-in-law family changed plans at the last minute and decided to go to the amusement park instead. I’m sorry.” The message was sent yesterday morning. Seeing this message made Lumi happy because she didn’t get to go to the tournament like she wanted, Bram also didn’t go.
“So, we were at the same place at the same time!?” Lumi squeaked happily with that thought in mind. Only she knows this. Bram has no clue. Her heart races. Shock, disbelief and excitement so many feelings and hopeful thinking rushing inside her. Lumi was now excitedly and impatiently waiting for Bram to reply when she hadn’t even finished sending her reply.
Bram logged on but saw that the message was still marked “Unread.” Disappointed. He decides to try again. “Refresh.” Then his eyes light up, “A new message” was highlighted. He clicked on and it read…
“I was at the amusement park too!”
“Really!” After a few more exchanges an unexpected realization hit.
“We’re you with a group of people of 4?”
“Yes, I was.”
“3 girls 1 tall boy? We’re you wearing a short with a blue off shoulder t-shirt with loose hair?”
“Yes, I was! You saw me? Why didn’t you say hi?”
“I only saw you from afar and had I approach if it wasn’t you, I would’ve wronged you.”
They both felt happy that they were so close to meeting in person. Yet sadness came over them knowing they missed each other but also amazed at the coincidence. They talk for hours through the night, voice notes, long messages, laughing. The connection deepens in a way neither had expected.
